While outward (hetero)sexuality was becoming less taboo, lesbians were seen as unusual, dangerous, and a threat to masculinity.

Lesbians often married men for financial or social reasons.

Communities of openly gay women were very slowly growing, developing their own slang as well.

Economic class:

1935: The Social Security Act provided relief for many people affected by the Great Depression in the years prior

​

The lack of job opportunities during the Great Depression made it even more difficult for women to find work.
